Cookie Preferences

We use exactly one cookie-related technology, and it's entirely optional. Here's what it does and how to control it.

What We Use

When you first visit our website, a small banner appears at the bottom of the screen asking whether you accept or decline analytics tracking. Your choice is stored in your browser's localStorage — a client-side storage mechanism that keeps data on your device and does not transmit it to our servers.

This is not technically a "cookie" in the traditional sense (which would be a small text file stored by your browser and sent to our server with each request). However, localStorage serves a similar function — it remembers your preference across visits — and regulations like the ePrivacy Directive and various national cookie laws generally treat localStorage the same as cookies for consent purposes. Hence this page.

What Each Setting Does

Accept

If you click "Accept," we enable our self-hosted analytics system (Plausible Analytics). This collects: the pages you visit; the referring website (if any); your browser type and operating system (derived from your user agent); your device type (desktop or mobile, derived from screen size); and your country (derived from your IP address, which is immediately discarded and never stored).

This data helps us understand which forecast pages are most popular, whether our website works correctly on different devices, and where our visitors are coming from. We use this information to prioritize improvements — for example, if we see that the hourly shifts page is heavily trafficked, we know to invest in expanding district coverage.

Decline

If you click "Decline," our analytics system remains disabled. We do not collect any analytics data about your visit. Your browsing experience is identical — all forecast data, all content, all features work exactly the same way. The only difference is that we don't see that you visited.

Settings

Clicking "Settings" on the cookie banner takes you to this page, where you can review your options and change your preference at any time.

What We Don't Use

We want to be clear about what we don't do. We do not use: Google Analytics or any Google tracking products; Facebook Pixel or any Meta tracking products; advertising cookies or retargeting pixels; third-party social media widgets that track you; embedded content (YouTube videos, Twitter feeds, etc.) that could set cookies; or any technology that creates a persistent identifier to track you across websites.

Our analytics system is self-hosted, meaning the data never leaves our infrastructure and is not processed by any third-party analytics company. We cannot and do not track individual users across sessions or across devices.

Managing localStorage

If you want to remove your cookie preference entirely (so you'll see the banner again on your next visit), you can clear your browser's localStorage for nipponpredict.com. Here's how in common browsers:

Chrome: Open Developer Tools (F12) → Application tab → Local Storage → Delete the "cookie-consent" key, or clear all browsing data and select "Cookies and other site data."

Firefox: Open Developer Tools (F12) → Storage tab → Local Storage → Delete the "cookie-consent" key, or clear recent history and select "Cookies."

Safari: Preferences → Privacy → Manage Website Data → Remove data for nipponpredict.com.

Changes to This Page

We may update this page if our cookie or analytics practices change. The "last updated" date at the bottom of this page indicates when the information was last revised. We will not materially expand our tracking without updating this page and, if required by law, requesting renewed consent.
